The Local Area

Known as Cornwall’s forgotton corner, the Rame Peninsula is a designated area of natural beauty, with quiet secluded beaches magnificent scenery and spectacular walks, yet remains mostly unknown to the hordes of tourists who flock to Cornwall every year on holiday. At its heart are the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand which are unspoilt and very picturesque. There are three shingle and sand beaches within the villages, all very safe for children, with rock pools to explore at low tide. In the summer months kayaks and sailing boats can be hired on Cawsand beach and a seasonal passenger ferry runs from Cawsand to Plymouth Barbican. There is a general store, post office, gift shops, cafes and numerous pubs within the village. In nearby Millbrook (1 mile) shops include a Co-Op and Spar which are open late, as well as Widacombqes, a great fruit and veg shop with a vegetarian cafe. There is a small Indian restaurant on the high street and Posh Nosh, our local Fish & Chip shop which also serves pizza, Thai and Chinese food. Around the peninsular, the Canteen at Maker offers excellent food and views, or the Cliff top cafe at Whitsands is a great place to fuel up before walking back to Cawsand. The Southwest Coastal Path starts at Cremyll and winds its way through the 800 acre Mount Edgcumbe Park, which is probably one of the most beautiful in England. There are a number of other villages to explore in Rame including St Johns and Crafthole, right down to Looe and beyond, so you wont be short of places to visit.

Getting to The Woodlands

From the South East take the M4 or A303, M5 and then onto the A38 which will lead you to Plymouth. From the North and the Midlands take the M5 which joins the A38. You can either stay on this road over the Tamar Bridge and follow directions below or immediately after the exit for Plymouth City Centre take the next exit which is signposted for the Torpoint Car Ferry and follow signs to reach it. Ferries run every 15 mins until 10 pm, the crossing takes 10 mins.

Via the Tamar Bridge:

Remain on the same road through Saltash, Landrake and Tideford until you reach the Trulefoot roundabout and turn left for Torpoint. After about 4 miles through Polbathic there is a right turn for Crafthole and Millbrook, remain on this road until you reach a T junction and turn left which eventually takes you around the edge of Millbrook and then follow same directions as above from Millbrook.

Via the Torpoint Ferry:

Remain on the same road from leaving the ferry and after about 3 miles turn left at Antony signposted to Millbrook and Cawsand. Carry on until you reach the T-junction and turn left and remain on this road for approximately 3 miles which takes you around the edge of Millbrook village and then up a hill, turn right at the top signposted to Kingsand and Cawsand. Drive down the hill towards the villages and at the bottom of the hill bear around to the right rather than going straight ahead for Kingsand, this takes you down a very steep hill for about 50 metres only and then the road bears around to the left, the Woodlands gates are on the left after 100 metres by the small lay-by.
